Why I Relay

As I mentioned in a previous post, Relay for Life is a cause very near and dear to my heart. We all have something that motivates us to try harder, live better, and give thanks—Relay for Life does that for me. My family has been touched by cancer long before I was ever truly aware of it; and unfortunately the phrase, “you have cancer,” is still heard every day, in every nation, and by too many people. In fact, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women are likely to hear those words.
My mom heard those words when I was two years old. She had noticed symptoms for over five years, but it wasn’t until she was at stage three that her doctor finally diagnosed her. Although I have no memories of this time in our family, it has left a lasting impression throughout the years of how physically challenging and psychologically difficult cancer can be. A few years later, my grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and my aunt was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As much of a battle as this was for our family, we have strong women and all three survived.
Since that time, friends, other family members, and strangers have battled the disease and it’s not fair. That’s why we have to fight back. We can’t stand by and let cancer win the fight. Children need parents, spouses need their partners, and people need the freedom to live their lives.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me in this fight. It would mean so much to me if you could donate. Even $5 would make such a difference! I’ve raised $5,000 so far and I would love to raise another $1000. Your donation goes to research, patient services, and support systems for the UCLA Relay for Life (which is the top college Relay in the country) at one of the leading universities in cancer research. Your donation is saving lives.
