“Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates…you never know what you’re gonna get.” If you’ve lived in America sometime during the past twenty years, then you probably know who said this famous quote. Forrest Gump is a classic film that depicts not only a portion of American history, but also the story of one incredible man. Though Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) may not be the next Bill Gates in terms of IQ, he can beat just about anyone in not only a game of ping pong, but also in positive attitude.
Despite all the tragedies in Forrest’s life, like watching his best friend Bubba die in the Vietnam War and then seeing his life-long love Jenny pass away, Forrest still found a way to see the sunny side. There was always something to smile about, even though s*** happens (if you remember that scene). Forrest Gump’s life depicts every human’s life; it is the epitome of existence. Life will always have challenges to overcome and tragedies to endure, but life will also offer us periods of abounding joy and moments of wonder. Life is about fulfillment; filled with sorrow but also happiness. I love how Forrest was still able to see the wonder in the world even with his struggles—he truly lived his life.
I hope that we can see the world through Forrest’s eyes. Perhaps we will float through this world like that fateful feather did, changing the world in a positive way wherever we go. And “that’s all I have to say about that.”
